What it costs to export a car to Portugal: our rates and Portuguese fees
Our rates cover the Dutch side: export document, plates, insurance, extensions and the BPM service. Portuguese government costs are separate and paid in Portugal: the IMT fee, the inspection, the one-off ISV and the annual IUC.
- Prices confirmed before you pay
- Cash or bank transfer
- Same postage rate for NL and abroad
from €50
The cost of importing a car to Portugal has two parts: what you pay us for the Dutch export, and the government costs that are paid there. Our prices are 'from' prices, including VAT where applicable, and we always confirm the price before you pay.

How our prices work
- Desk prices are starting prices (the BPM refund service has a fixed fee), including VAT where applicable, and apply during office hours: Monday to Saturday 10:00 to 16:30.
- On Sundays we are open by appointment at a higher rate: call or WhatsApp first for the final price. A surcharge may apply outside office hours.
- The additional rates are guide prices. A written price confirmation for your vehicle, route, start date and shipping always takes precedence.
- You always know the price in advance. You can pay in cash or by bank transfer.
Surcharges: Sundays, post and heavy vehicles
- Outside office hours a surcharge may apply. Sunday is by appointment at a higher rate, so call or send a WhatsApp message first for the final price.
- Delivery by post: the export document costs €120 including a standard insured DHL shipment (about 5 working days), or €150 with DHL Express (about 1 working day), the same rate for the Netherlands and abroad.
- Heavy or unusual vehicles: motorhomes, vans and trucks over 2,500 kg are priced on request.
- Caravans from €220, and trailers €250 at the desk or €280 express, after we assess the situation.
The same postal rates apply when the car is already in Portugal and the export is done remotely; contact us first and we confirm the price beforehand.
What the Dutch export price does not include
Our prices cover the Dutch side only: the RDW export, the export insurance through our insurance partner and the white plates. They do not include transport, which we do not offer, or any fee or tax that is due on arrival.
Portuguese government costs, not ours: IMT, CITV, ISV, IUC
These costs are set by the Portuguese authorities and paid locally. We do not collect, calculate or pay them.
| Cost item | What applies |
|---|---|
| IMT registration fee, used vehicle | €45 with CoC or national homologation, €165 without |
| Inspection for registration at a CITV | €76.03 plus VAT |
| ISV, one-off vehicle tax | calculated by customs (AT) |
| Registration in the Registo Automóvel (IRN) | amount not stated; online via Automóvel Online 15 per cent cheaper than in person |
| IUC, annual circulation tax | due every year; amount not stated |
| Application for the ISV exemption on moving | free |
How ISV and car tax in Portugal are set
The ISV is a one-off tax at the first Portuguese registration, calculated by customs (AT) from engine capacity and CO2 emissions. Used cars from the EU get a reduction of 10 to 80 per cent depending on age (table D, shown on our page about how to import a car). Fully electric cars pay no ISV. For a private buyer, VAT at 23 per cent is due only on a new means of transport.
The IUC is the annual car tax. A vehicle that is in the country for more than 183 days in a calendar year owes it even if it does not have to be registered there. We give no ISV or IUC amounts and no totals.
Moving there? The application for the ISV exemption is free; see moving to Portugal with a car.
Paying for your export: cash or bank transfer
At the desk you pay in cash or by bank transfer. For an extension of the insurance, you pay only after we have confirmed the insurer's approval and the price. Questions about a quote? Contact the export desk.

Costs of a car import to Portugal: FAQ
Do you collect the Portuguese taxes?
No. The ISV, the IMT fee, the inspection and the annual IUC are paid by the owner in Portugal. We do not calculate, collect or pay them.
How much ISV will I pay?
Customs (the AT) calculates it from the engine capacity and CO2 emissions, with a reduction of 10 to 80 per cent for used cars from the EU depending on age. Fully electric cars pay no ISV. We give no amounts or totals.
When can your price be higher?
Outside office hours, on Sundays (by appointment), for delivery by post and for heavy or unusual vehicles. The price is always confirmed before we start.
What does sending the papers to Portugal cost?
The export document by post costs €120, including a standard insured DHL shipment with tracking (about 5 working days), or €150 with DHL Express (about 1 working day). The rate is the same for the Netherlands and abroad. If the car is already in Portugal, contact us first; we confirm the price beforehand.
Can I pay for the export in cash at the desk?
Yes. You can pay in cash or by bank transfer.
