Car with white Dutch export plates, ready for the export drive to Portugal
Complete export package for Portugal: registration certificate part II, Green Card and two white export plates

Legalising a car in Portugal involves several bodies and appointments, and your 14 days of export insurance can end before the Portuguese registration is complete. We can then extend the cover, also when your current insurance was arranged elsewhere. We are not an insurer: the extension runs through our insurance partner, and each time the insurer has to agree.

With an extension you receive a new Green Card, also as a PDF by email.

Common reasons to extend export insurance in Portugal

  • waiting for the national homologation number from the IMT;
  • waiting for an inspection appointment at a CITV;
  • the DAV at customs and the calculation of the ISV;
  • the IMT file, or the ISV exemption on transfer of residence;
  • a delay in transport, or a buyer who is not ready yet.

Plan ahead: the DAV is due within 20 working days of entry, and a request made in time lets the new cover follow on from the current one without a gap.

Requesting an extension of export insurance, step by step

  1. Send your request via WhatsApp, email or the form on this page. Photos and documents go through the WhatsApp button next to the form, or by email.
  2. We check the request and ask the insurer for approval.
  3. We confirm the approval and the price: from €120 per 14 days. Heavy or unusual vehicles can cost more; the price is always confirmed beforehand.
  4. You pay by bank transfer. The new insurance certificate with Green Card usually arrives by email within 15 minutes, as a PDF.

If the insurer does not agree, you pay nothing. You can extend more than once, each time by 14 days and each time after the insurer agrees. At our desk in Hengelo it is possible too; the Green Card document is then usually ready within 15 minutes. For several vehicles or a long-term relationship a discount is sometimes possible, always agreed in advance.

Extend Green Card cover from abroad

You do not need to come back to the Netherlands. The extension is arranged online, via WhatsApp, email or the form, and the new Green Card arrives by email as a PDF. Tell us in which country the vehicle is now and where it is going, so the insurer can assess the request. If papers or plates also need to be sent, documents go out insured with tracking.

Information the insurer needs for a Green Card extension

  • the registration number;
  • the current Green Card or policy, as a photo or PDF;
  • the end date of the current cover;
  • where the vehicle is now, and its destination;
  • the details of the policyholder and the driver.

Apply in time, so the new cover follows on from the current one. The policy and Green Card state in which countries and for which driver you are insured.

Limits of an extension: export plates, APK and the DAV period

  • The export plate itself is not extended. On Dutch roads you may drive for 14 days after deregistration and never longer than the APK (the Dutch roadworthiness test) is valid.
  • Still in the Netherlands after those 14 days? Then the vehicle can only travel on a trailer or transporter.
  • In Portugal the Portuguese rules apply. During the ISV payment period, a car with a valid foreign registration may only be used with a copy of the DAV and driven by the owner or their spouse or partner. Whether a Dutch export plate still counts as valid registration after its 14 days is not clear, and the rules vary by country: check with customs before you drive, especially if you are resident in Portugal.
  • Cover already expired? The vehicle is uninsured between the old and the new cover and must not be driven in that gap.

Good to know

  • Starting price per 14-day extension, including VAT where applicable. The price can be higher per vehicle, for example for heavy or non-standard vehicles.
  • Every extension needs the insurer's approval, and you only pay once we have confirmed that approval and the price. You can extend more than once, each time by 14 days.
  • Request the extension in good time so the new cover follows on from the current one. If your cover has already expired, an extension is still possible, for example if the vehicle has a valid APK (Dutch roadworthiness test) or technical inspection, again subject to the insurer's approval. Until the new cover starts, the vehicle must not be driven.
  • The extension covers the insurance only, not the export registration. On Dutch public roads you may drive for 14 days after deregistration, and never beyond the APK expiry date (RDW). The extension does not change that.
  • Abroad, the rules of the country where the vehicle is located apply. The policy and Green Card state which countries and drivers are covered.

Extending export insurance in Portugal: FAQ

Can I extend insurance that was arranged elsewhere?

Yes. If your current export insurance was arranged by another company, we can extend the cover by 14 days with a follow-on insurance, once the insurer agrees.

What if my cover has already expired?

An extension may still be possible, for example if the vehicle has a valid APK or roadworthiness test, again after the insurer agrees. Between the end of the old cover and the start of the new one, the vehicle is uninsured and must not be driven.

Does the extension also extend my export plates?

No. The extension only concerns the insurance. On Dutch roads export plates are valid for 14 days after deregistration and never beyond the APK. In Portugal and the transit countries the local rules apply, and they vary by country.

Can I use the car in Portugal while the ISV is being paid?

During the ISV payment period, a car with a valid foreign registration may only be used with a copy of the DAV and driven by the owner or their spouse or partner. Whether an export plate still counts as valid after its 14 days is not clear, so check with customs first.

How quickly do I receive the new Green Card?

After we confirm the insurer's approval and the price, you pay by bank transfer. The new insurance certificate with Green Card then usually arrives by email within 15 minutes, as a PDF.
